Gus Poyet might be spoilt for choice on who to pick for the game at Arsenal this weekend as the level of competition through the squad is heating up.

When Sunderland beat Southampton in the FA Cup last week, Poyet had made nine changes to his side and after the game he spoke of how he was impressed with the level of their performance.

And singled out for praise is Craig Gardner, the man who hit the only goal of the game that saw the Black Cats progress in the competition, in fact all the players are causing Poyet a selection headache ahead of the trip to the Emirates Stadium.

Speaking to the club’s official website, he said: “The players were outstanding [against Southampton], when people read nine changes maybe they were expecting a scrappy game.

“Even without creating too much in the first half, on the ball we were very, very good, organised, difficult to beat and breaking and pressing.

“I can use any player at any time, without any doubt.”

The last time Sunderland won at Arsenal was in the League Cup in 2002 at Highbury.
