Saint Kelvin…

As reported yesterday Kelvin Davis has today completed his £1.25m move to Southampton after 12 miserable months on Wearside.

The former Ipswich ‘keeper has signed for an initial £800,000, with the fee rising to up to £1.25m with appearance fees.

Davis arrived at Sunderland only last summer from Ipswich for around £1m, but after an inconsistent season in a very poor side, Sunderland have decided to sell the stopper, and will be happy to have received a similar fee to the one they paid Ipswich.

After the signing of Kenny Cunningham, Davis is the first player to be sold under Niall Quinn, and with no manager yet in place, Quinn looks to have took it upon himself to begin transfer negotiations for players coming and going from the club. Julio Arca and Tommy Miller are also expected to leave the club this summer, while a new £2m bid from Reading for Dean Whitehead is expected next week.

In the meantime Quinn will be looking for further players to bring in as replacements, so long as he has no manager to do so, with Newcastle’s Steve Harper linked, along with Tottenham’s Andy Reid.
