Niall Quinn is set to complete the signing of Clive Clarke from West Ham and Anthony Stokes from Arsenal.

Clarke, the former Stoke full back, is expected to sign in time for tomorrow’s deadline in order to be eligible for Sunday’s season opener at Coventry,

Quinn told the club website,

‘We’ve another 24 hours to see if we can get a left-back. Clive Clarke is pretty close to signing and we hope that comes off but if not we have another solution or two.’

Should he sign in time it is likely that he will be thrown straight into the starting line-up due to George McCartney’s injury.

Anthony Stokes is an 18-year old attacking midfield player who is also able to play upfront, is to be watched by Quinn, as well as 4 other trialists, in today’s behind closed doors match at the Academy of Light,

‘He’s a kid who arrived in a blaze of glory from Ireland with all the big clubs trying to get him,’ Quinn told the club website.

‘He has excelled through the youth teams at Arsenal and made it into the reserves, but Arsene Wenger is keen for him to play in a first team.

‘We said we’d take him here to train so we could look at him first and he will play some part in the training ground game today. He has been very impressive.’

Should he impress Quinn, as he has done all week in training, he will sign a one-year loan deal with Sunderland.

Robbie Elliot, Arnau Caldentey Riera, Michael Gspurning and Edika Bordas are the other trialists hoping to earn a deal at the Stadium of Light.
