Gus Poyet was hoping to have quite a fresh looking Sunderland side together well before the start of the season, but he admits that things have not gone to plan.

Poyet’s frustration comes after seeing 12 players leave the Stadium of Light during the summer, but he has only been able to get four players, Patrick van Aanholt, Jordi Gomez, Billy Jones and Costel Pantilimon, through the entrance door.

Now Poyet is getting desperate to get new faces in and he has told sporting director Lee Congerton and chief executive Mags Byrne that he would like to see four more players in asap.

Speaking from the training camp in Portugal, Poyet said: ‘One or two they are close, but if you had asked me last week I would have said those two were close too.

‘I cannot wait another week. We are going to be off Monday and Tuesday, so next Wednesday I need to have four new players.

‘It’s clear we need a few new players, and it has not been as quick as I would have expected.’

Poyet has seen players approached by Sunderland only to see them all walk away from deals. Fabio Borini, Cristian Rodriguez and Max Clayton are three of them, although that talks are now supposed to be back on with Borini and two of the other three are likely to be Marcos Alonso and Santiago Vergini.

Poyet went on: ‘I am like any other manager, the sooner you get the players the better. I hope it is now, today, tomorrow.

‘It’s difficult for me because there are things we need to work on this week, and the beginning of next week and that`s practically it.

‘The only thing you can do is ensure everything is in place and refresh things that you`ve done.’
