Gus Poyet watched his side overcome Manchester City at the Stadium of Light on Sunday and then declared that Sunderland are capable of avoiding the drop.

The stadium erupted in the 21st minute of the game when Phil Bardsley curled in a shot and despite Manchester City’s best attempts, they could not break down a resilient Sunderland defence that looked so much stronger with having Wes Brown back.

The win does give the Black Cats hope, they have now recorded two league wins under the leadership of Poyet and the manager is pleased with the situation.

He told reporters: ‘Tactically it’s difficult to explain but we talked a lot, and tried to convince them it was possible – especially to keep a clean sheet against a top, top team who have scored seven and five in their last two games.

‘It just shows that if we believe and we are convinced, I think it [avoiding relegation] is going to be possible.’

Sunderland now sit in 19th place and just three points behind West Ham, Stoke and Fulham who are all on ten.

If Wes Brown performs like he did against City for the rest of the season then we stand an excellent chance of staying up. But can he keep from getting injured?
