Sunderland boss Gus Poyet was delighted by the way his side forced their way back into the game against Cardiff on Saturday and was also happy to get a slice of luck for a change.

With just seven minutes left on the clock it looked like Sunderland had fallen to yet another defeat and drained of all confidence they might have had to fight on with.

But then Steven Fletcher struck and then the visitors just swept aside Cardiff as they tried to find an equaliser, which they did five minutes into stoppage time.

Jack Colback grabbed the goal via a deflection and Poyet was happy that the ball went into the net how it did.

‘I am delighted we scored a deflected goal for the first time in a while, because it (luck) was always against us,’ he said to reporters. ‘It was time to get a little bit of luck and get a lucky goal.

‘It looked difficult, but in the last 25 minutes there was only one team on the pitch, we were coming and coming and coming, and knocking on the door.

‘We are never going to give up, to beat us you are going to have to be very good or you are going to have to fight very hard because we are going to fight to the end.’

Now Sunderland are literally within touching distance of getting safe after being written off as down and if Gus can get the right players in early during the transfer window, Premiership football could well be on the menu at the Stadium of Light next season.
