Head Coach Paolo Di Canio was bullish after he saw his side beaten 2-1 at Chelsea, warning fellow relegation rivals that his side ‘are ready for the fight.’

Wigan’s failure to beat Queens Park Rangers mean that the Lads avoid dropping into the relegation zone, but with only goal difference separating 17th place Sunderland & 18th place Wigan, it’s too close for comfort.

Sunderland took a surprise lead on the stroke of half-time when Blues’ defender Cesar Azpilicueta put through his own goal.

Chelsea were level just two minutes after the break though, when Matt Kigallon returned the favour.

And, after 10 second-half minutes, Branislav Ivanovic turned the game on its head, deflecting David Luiz’s shot beyond Simon Mignolet.

Speaking afterwards to safc.com, Di Canio was upbeat:

“We have sent a clear message today – we are ready for the fight,’ declared Di Canio.

“The players are a great group – after the first half I thought to go into the break with one goal was deserved.’

The Italian continued:

“We created the best chances; it was a fantastic effort in the first half and we can be happy with that.”

Sunderland head to Tyneside next Sunday to take on the Mags.
