Paolo Di Canio was, unsurprisingly, a happy man at full-time today as Sunderland overcame Everton 1-0 to move six points clear of the drop.

The Italian labelled the victory over the Champions League hopefuls as ‘one of the best moments of my sporting life’.

In a scrappy encounter with few clear-cut chances, Stephane Sessegnon’s 45th minute goal was enough to hand Di Canio a win in his first home match in charge of the Black Cats.

Speaking afterwards to the Official Site, Di Canio was unequivocal.

It was an incredible atmosphere – it will go down as one of the best moments in my sporting life.

“I`m very emotional – it was great to have the chance to celebrate together once again,’ enthused the Italian.

“There were some moments I didn`t enjoy, when Everton won the ball too easily, but we are working hard to stop these things and working hard to perfect ourselves.

“Yes, there was pressure from Everton but that`s typical in the Premier League, you have to expect that from teams,’ explained the 44 year-old.

Sunderland are back in Premier League action next Monday as they travel to Villa Park to taking on Aston Villa.
