Martin O’Neill was a happy man on Saturday as he saw his Sunderland side overcome West Ham 3-0 at the Stadium of Light.
The result over the East Londoners sees the Black Cats cement 14th spot – six points above the drop zone at this stage.
Goals from Seb Larsson – a stunner – Adam Johnson and a James McClean tap-in secured a comfortable win for the Lads who consigned the Irons to another away day defeat.
Speaking afterwards to the Sunderland Official Site, O’Neill said of the victory:
“It was a great performance from start to finish.’
The Ulsterman continued: “Our second goal very important, we were 1-0 up at the break and I thought we should have had more. West Ham were looking dangerous.
“[Adam] Johnson`s goal came at an important time and then the third one killed it off.”
Sam Allardyce was understandably less-than-impressed with his side’s showing – their sixth away defeat in 10 Barclays Premier League matches.
‘It was the time and the way that we conceded the second goal that was most frustrating,’ Allardyce told the West Ham Official Site.
The former Mags boss lamented his side’s defending: ‘The ball gets headed out and, in the space of a few seconds, Stephane Sessegnon is running down their right in behind Guy Demel and he passed it across the box and there is James McClean stood all on his own. God only knows where our defenders had gone.’
Sunderland are back in F.A Cup action this week as they host N.Power Championship outfit Bolton Wanderers at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday night.
