Sunderland have re-called striker Connor Wickham from his loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday.

Wickham, 19, goes straight into Martin O’Neill’s squad for Saturday’s relegation six-pointer against Norwich City at the Stadium of Light.

With O’Neill recently switching the system from 4-2-3-1 to 4-4-2 having let Wickham, Ji Dong-Won, Fraizer Campbell and Louis Saha leave since the turn of the year, Sunderland have been light up front.

The England U21 international made four starts and two substitute appearances for the Owls, scoring in last Saturday’s surprise 1-0 victory over Leicester City.

Speaking to the Official Sheffield Wednesday site, boss Dave Jones praised the 6’3 hitman:

“I`ve been really pleased with Connor during his loan, he was a pleasure to work with and a talented player.

“I`ve spoken with Martin O`Neill and we really wanted Connor to stay but I fully understand that Sunderland have a striker shortage at the moment.”
