Sunderland loan signing, John Mensah has this afternoon captained Ghana to a group victory over Serbia.

Lyon’s Mensah played very well, and maybe surprisingly to some lasted the full 90 minutes at centre half.

Ghana won the game with a late penalty after Serbia had earlier been reduced to 10 men and now play Germany & Australia as they try to progress to Round Two.

Sunderland boss, Steve Bruce has yet to decide on making a move for Mensah to retain his services for next season, but performances like this will surely tempt Bruce into securing his signature, at least for another season on loan.

Though it doesn’t count for much, I’m of the opinion you should keep him, if only on loan. What have you got to lose? If you find he’s struggling for fitness or is a disappointment, end it and send him back. If, as I suspect, he proves himself to be a terrific defender, buy him out.
