Former Sunderland forward James McFadden has opted to return home, signing for former club Motherwell until the end of the season.

McFadden, 29, had been on trial with the ‘Well this week, but assistant manager Kenny Black suggested a deal would not be forthcoming.

Despite that, Motherwell last night announced the signing of the winger who made just three substitute appearances for the Black Cats.

Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill had spoken of his desire to extend McFadden’s contract until the end of the season before loaning him out in order to build up his match fitness.

However, after a move to Nottingham Forest fell through, the former Scotland international looked increasingly likely to not return to the Stadium of Light.

Good luck, James.
