Former Sunderland midfielder Liam Lawrence has been snapped up by Barnsley on a short term deal that will last until the end of the season.

Tykes manager Danny Wilson has signed the 32 year old who was released from his two year contract with Greek side PAOK Salonika.

‘It’s going to be a good experience, hopefully I can bring something to the team that will help us survive this year,’ Lawrence told the Tykes’ official website.

‘I missed the football here when I left (for Greece) and I’m looking forward to getting back into the thick of it.

‘I watched the Championship in Greece on Sky and it gave me fire in my belly again to come back.’

Lawrence moved to Sunderland for £150,000 in 2004, before Stoke City came in and paid £500,000 for his services in 2007 after an initial loan spell.
