While the rest of the Sunderland squad all make their way to holiday destinations, striker Steven Fletcher will be at the Academy of Light trying to get fit again for next season.

The Scotland international has been suffering with an ankle injury which kept him out of action from the middle of March, he is making good progress at the moment but he is at the stage where he cannot just up and leave so he is having to carry on for the time being.

Manager Gus Poyet is pleased with how Fletcher is coming along after a season that saw injuries get the better of him, but knows that the next couple of weeks is highly important for his comeback progress.

The boss explained to the Sunderland Echo: “Fletch has been out jogging.

“He`s doing well, but, before he goes on holiday, he needs a minimum of two weeks training every day.

“He doesn`t have to do it all with us – he can do a lot of it on his own.

“But it will be a few weeks before he can go away, when he`s fully recovered.”

In the season just past, Fletch made 20 appearances and scored three times.
