Steven Fletcher says that it is possible for Sunderland to turn their season around and get themselves out of trouble at the bottom of the league.

Without a win so far this season and just one draw to their name the Black Cats are in the mire at the bottom of the table, but a win against Newcastle could well kick start their season.

But it won’t be easy with eight games gone already, not many would put money on Sunderland playing Premier League football next term.

Fletcher told the Chronicle: “As players we know we`re good enough to stay up. We`re a good team and a strong squad it`s just picking up wins.

“We have had it hard with a run of games against the top teams [Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United have all visited the Stadium of Light already] but we need to play them at some point.

“We have played them one after each other but I said to the boys we may as well get them out of the way.

“We have got them out of the way but got the wrong results. Hopefully we can pick it up. We believe we can. The spirit is still good. No one is moping around.”

Fletcher knows that last season’s derby turned things around for Sunderland, but he missed that game through injury, but he is ready for action this time.
