Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio spoke about the moment he was sent off in the defeat against Arsenal by Martin Atkinson after the pair clashed at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

Di Canio was not too pleased about the referee’s decision not to play advantage which would have resulted in his side bringing tee game back level at 2-2.

Barcary Sagna was also shown a yellow card when a red looked more appropriate.

The Italian told Sky Sports: ‘I wasn’t happy that their player was taking two minutes to walk 40 yards from the middle of the pitch. The referee told me, ‘if you keep going with your manner, I’ll send you up to the stand.’

‘My mistake was that I said to him, ‘if you want to complete a perfect job, you only have to send me off.’ He said, ‘Go off’.’

I’m optimistic, not as much as I was before the season started, admittedly, but I still think we’ll have a solid season
