Sunderland manager David Moyes saw his side knocked out of the League Cup last night and also had the humiliation of being sent off to deal with.

The game was won thanks to a solitary goal from the Saints’ record signing Sofiane Boufal who arrowed a shot into the top corner of the net on 66 minutes.

The defeat comes as hopes were high that a good cup run would perhaps help turn around Sunderland’s atrocious start to the season.

And to make things worse for Moyes, he was sent to the stand late on by referee Chris Kavanagh who objected to one of his sidekicks being sworn at by Moyes because of a dodgy decision after Victor Anichebe was fouled in the penalty area.

It was an explosive end to a game that lacked goalmouth action a showed little signs of excitement for the crowd.

Moyes told the BBC after the game: ‘I was sent off for leaving my box and swearing at the fourth official.

‘The problem was he chased me down the touchline. I swore at him and I shouldn’t have done so I deserved to be sent off.

‘When you see the penalty decision again it’s a stonewaller, no question. Inside the box Maya Yoshida fouls Victor, he comes across him, and it should have been a definite penalty awarded.’

Southampton go on to face Arsenal in the last eight of the competition.
