Danny Welbeck`s career in Sunderland looks to have been all but shut down as Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed he expects the youngster to report for pre-season training for next season.

The 20-year-old who is currently away on under-21 duty with England, had earlier confirmed he didn`t know where his future may lie but it now look more clear as ever.

Speaking to Manutd.com Sir Alex said “Welbeck has been fantastic; it’s just unfortunate that he picked up a bad injury, but they will all be ready for next year.’

The player himself has not ruled out a possible move though, he said: ‘I’ve not really thought too much about what I’m going to do, but I’ve really enjoyed my time at Sunderland.

‘It has benefited me massively, just to be around with the big boys week in, week out. I’m delighted with that, but the end of the season will be the time to sit down and think about the future.’

No doubt Black Cat fans will be hugely disappointed if this decision is indeed true as the on loan striker has become very popular amongst the terraces.

But as Niall Quinn confirmed during his mini tour, it would take a vast amount of cash to lure him to Wearside.

If they were to bid they would face great competition from Everton and the Merseyside club could have the upper hand as they could offer hot prospect Jack Rodwell in a cash plus player swap in the summer.
