Sunderland defender Danny Collins is optimistic for the new season after Sunderland more than matched Liverpool for 80 minutes.

Torres broke the dead lock with a flash of quality and the Sunderland defender admits they back off him a bit.

Collins told the official site: “It was the best we`ve played in while, I thought we should have been in front at half time, we played some good stuff in the first half.”

“We’d been up against arguably the best striker in the world and we’d hardly given him a touch. Then he went and scored, which was annoying, but it shows that he only needs one chance.”

“He managed to turn and get a shot in and from our point of view we could have got closer to him, to get a block in.”

“It was an encouraging start to the season for us, a pretty good performance and we must build on it.”

Vital Sunderland Says

Collins is right we were by far the best team in the first half we just lacked the killer touch in front of goal.

If only we had someone with the quality of Torres.
