Campbell Stays Positive

Campbell, 23, was injured in a freak collision against Manchester United in August and has been working hard behind the scenes to make a quick recovery.

Campbell was in great form in pre season but was dealt the worst blow to his professional career when he came home after the Man U game.

Campbell told safc.com: ‘When I went home after the game it didn’t feel too bad. The scan wasn’t too bad, either.

‘But when I had it the doctor said I would be out for six months and it really hit me that night.

‘That was probably the lowest point of my career but I just had to sweep it under the carpet and get on with it. You don’t get better by dwelling on things.’

Campbell has been impressed by Sunderland since the derby day defeat and is aiming to come back a bigger and stronger player.

Campbell added: ‘Things are going okay.

‘I’m making slow steps towards my goal. An injury like this sometimes makes me sit back and realise how much I love going out there and playing football.

‘That’s especially true of big games like the one at Chelsea recently. It makes me want to come back quicker and stronger than I was before.

‘I was kicking every ball at home (watching the game against the Blues), running round and celebrating every goal. In general though, I try to tone things down when I’m watching with the family.

‘We have a great medical team here (at the club) and they have been fantastic with me. The time is flying by. The first couple of months are the hardest and I’ve found them comparatively easy, so I think things are going really well.’
