Sunderland striker Darren Bent has now went five games without hitting the net and it is not for lack of trying.

He missed several great chances at home in the 2-0 defeat to Blackpool and also smashed the crossbar with a free kick.

Sunderland manager Steve Bruce, who has lost two other strikers through injury, is confident he will be back amongst the goals by New Years day.

Bruce told the Sunderland Echo: ‘Darren Bent has had a wonderful 18 months for us.

‘There’s going to be a time when a goalscorer goes through a lean period, and that’s happening to him now.

‘But class is permanent as they say, and Darren has shown over the seasons that he’s class.

‘Yeah, he’s missed a few chances, but the big thing for me is that he’s kept on getting in there and trying to get on the end of one.

‘It’s only a matter of time before he gets goals again.

‘He is a goalscorer. He enjoys scoring a goal.

‘He has been a fantastic asset for us, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he scored against Blackburn Rovers.
