Defender Wes Brown looks set to miss the remainder of the season with the knee injury which has ruled him out since pre-season, Martin O’Neill has confirmed.

Brown, 33, picked up a knee ligament problem during the pre-season tour of South Korea and has been sidelined ever since.

The experienced former England and Manchester United defender subsequently appears unlikely to play for the Black Cats this season.

Speaking to the Sunderland Official Site, O’Neill conceded that the centre-half’s season was almost certainly over.

“He`s joined in training on a few days and then has to take some time out again,’ revealed O’Neill.

“Chances are we probably won`t see him between now and the end of the season, but perhaps it`ll be one he wants to forget and start again next season.”

There’s more positive news for Danny Rose, who came through a practice match unscathed in midweek.

The Tottenham Hotspur loanee has been out with a hamstring injury and has been training with the north Londoners who have been overseeing his recuperation from injury.

Whether or not Saturday’s trip to Queens Park Rangers comes too soon for the England U21 left-back remains to be seen.
