Scoring 25 goals, leading Sunderland to a respectable 13th league position finish, Darren Bent had to be named in the World Cup squad. Cappello even said he would ‘pick players on form’ but decided to pick Rooney, Heskey, Defoe and Crouch and flop in South Africa.

Now Darren has the chance to show the Country and their manager what he is made of when they meet Hungary next week.

Bent told the official site: ‘I’m delighted to be back in the England squad; getting called up for your country is a great feeling.

‘It’s a great boost before the season even starts; hopefully I can do well, take my chance and press my claims to become a regular part of the international squad.

‘Playing for your country at Wembley is a great honour for any player so hopefully I can get on.

‘I will go down there and give it my all, then see what happens.’

Bent will play his last pre season game for Sunderland against Hoffenheim this afternoon and then meet up with the rest of the England hopefuls for the friendly.

Best of luck Darren!
