Sam Allardyce has been backed by the former FA chairman David Bernstein as the man to take over as manager of England now that Roy Hodgson has left the post.

Bernstein is the man that gave Hodgson the job when he started and he has identified Allardyce as the man who should be the next to try to steer the national side to glory.

Bernstein also believes that Big Sam would be able to get the England player back to a winning mentality as he believes that there is a psychological problem in the England camp.

Gareth Southgate had been tipped by many to take control, but he ruled himself out of the running on Wednesday.

This has lead to Bernstein telling the Daily Telegraph: ‘I’m not saying we should have an English manager but, of the English managers, I actually would go for Sam Allardyce.

‘He’s a very powerful character.

‘I think he’s got the personality, the strength, he’s a good technical manager, he’s very experienced and he’s someone who perhaps could imbue confidence.’
