The Sunderland players felt they ‘owed’ Steve Bruce a big result and performance and he feels they achieved that on Saturday as they ran away 4-2 winners.

Sunderland now find themselves joint 9th behind Newcastle on goal difference and aim to continue to climb the league before the season finishes.

Mignolet told the Sunderland Echo: “Our aim has always been to finish in the top 10 from the start of the season and that`s still our main target for this season.

“It`s not about whether we think we are safe now, not at all.

“We have to play our final four matches like we did against Wigan and get as high up the table as we can.

“We don`t talk about Newcastle, about finishing above them, all we talk about is finishing in the top 10 this season.”

Mignolet, who was unhappy to concede two goals admitted the threat of relegation was the cause for Sunderland to blow away Wigan with four goals in only twenty minutes.

“After the defeat at Birmingham there was a sense that we had let the manager down, the fans down and the club down,” he said

“We knew that Saturday against Wigan was going to be hectic because of the build-up.

“But we all had to stay focused and compete because we knew we had the players capable of getting a result.

“That`s the thing, we always knew that we had the ability in the dressing room, we just had to prove it.

“Even during the difficult few months, we never lost our belief.

“We always thought we could turn it around and I think that showed against Wigan.

“We now have to move on to the Fulham game, forget about the last game – which was a relief – because the season is not finished yet.

“We have to make it impossible to slip back down.”
