Sunderland’s young striker Connor Wickham has been included in Stuart Pearce’s England U21 squad for this summer’s European Championships.

Wickham, who has already won 13 caps and scored five times for England’s U21s, will fly to Israel next month after being selected as one of three forwards in Pearce’s 23-man squad.

Danny Rose – who has returned to Tottenham Hotspur this week – is also included in the squad along with ex-Black Cats’ midfielder, Jordan Henderson.

Pearce’s men take on Italy, Norway and hosts Israel next month as they look to improve on their poor showing two years ago, where they failed to get out of their group.
