Sunderland have been linked to Demba Ba over the past fortnight and the transfer seems to have taken a new bizarre twist.

West Ham have wrote to the Premier league over an illegal approach by Sunderland outside the transfer window.

The regulations are detailed in Section K of the Premier League rulebook and state that a club cannot approach a contracted player at another club either directly or indirectly without prior written consent.

Indeed, even a public statement expressing an interest in a player can be construed as an offence.

Sunderland have released a statement in quick fashion denying any wrong-doing: ‘Sunderland AFC is fully aware of the Premier League regulations pertaining to player recruitment.

‘If we are interested in any player currently under contract with another club, we will speak directly to that club, in line with the regulations.’

It is very unlike the professional Niall Quinn and Steve Walton to break any transfer etiquette and hopefully the accusation is brushed under the rug by the FA this week.

In good news, we are definately trying to get Ba in after a great run of seven goals in only 10 league games for the Championship team.
