The League Cup season continued with the second round games, which were played in midweek.

On Tuesday, an outstanding first round tie, previously abandoned due to the weather, saw Derby secure a narrow win over Grimsby, booking a second round meeting with Championship rivals Barnsley.

Crystal Palace were among the Premier League sides that entered into the competition at the second round stage and Frank De Boer secured a first win as Eagles boss when Ipswich were overcome 2-1 at Selhurst Park.

Tuesday was a good night for topflight sides on the whole as Watford were the only Premier League side knocked out when the Hornets lost by the odd goal in five when Lee Johnson’s Bristol City won at Vicarage Road.

West Brom, Bournemouth, Brighton, Swansea and Leicester saw off Accrington, Birmingham, Barnet, MK Dons and Sheffield United, respectively.

Championship sides Aston Villa (4-1), Leeds (5-1), Middlesbrough (3-0), Norwich (4-1) and Brentford (4-1) had comfortable wins over Wigan, Newport, Scunthorpe, Charlton and QPR to move into round three.

A few surprise defeats saw Championship leaders Cardiff beaten by visiting Burton and League One side Doncaster ended Hull’s involvement with a win at the Keepmoat Stadium – Fulham also bowed out when Bristol Rovers went away from Craven Cottage with a 1-0 win.

Here’s a round-up of the League Cup results with some games to take place.
