Patrick van Aanholt is feeling better about his performances after he admitted to not having the best of starts to the season.

van Aanholt was speaking to the Shields Gazette when he admitted that things were not right at the club until new manager Sam Allardyce came along, now he is beginning to get the best out of the players he has available

The 25 year old was even left out of the side by fellow Dutchman Dick Advocaat.

But the defender has been involved in games more regular now and Saturday saw him conjure up his first Premiership goal for the club which was quite brilliant.

He told the Gazette: “I started the season very badly and that happens with young players coming to the Premier League.

“I had my ups and downs, but since the new gaffer came in, he`s given everyone a chance.

“I`m glad I`m playing and I`ve got my first Premier League goal.”
