The Under-18’s started the new year on a disappointing note by losing to Everton 1-0 at the Academy of Light on Friday.

The game was a fairly even affair with the visitors just shading the play and skills and well worth their win.

The game was won with a goal three minutes before half time when the lively Michael Donohue came in from the left, evaded to challenges and smashed the ball into the top corner of the net.

Sunderland had chances to equalise, Dan Pybus saw a header turned over the bar by the Everton keeper and Luke Molyneux thought he had scored when he went round the keeper only to see his shot blocked by James Graham.

After the game coach Elliott Dickman said: “We just didn`t do enough. The first half was disappointing, but we improved in the second period. Admittedly, their keeper made some good saves, but we should have done more.”

Sunderland Team: Talbot, Casey (Lowrie 82), J Robson, McEvoy, Colquhoun, Ledger, Blinco, E Robson (Embleton 46, Pybus, Wright (Graham 65), Molyneux.
