Trip Down Memory Lane

9 years ago Sunderland done what many dream to do at Stamford Bridge and win away from home in style.

Claudio Ranieri was in charge of the game as a confident Sunderland side stepped up to show their potential in a great season in 2001.

In typical Sunderland form they fell behind in the first half to two goals from Eidur Gudjohnsen but Peter Reid’s men, and in particular Don Hutchinson tore into the Chelsea defence to turn the game around.

Reid said on the memorable day: ‘Hutch was outstanding – his performance up front was very similar to the one he gave for Scotland against England that persuaded me I wanted to sign him.’

Hutchinson ran the show in the middle before Gavin McCann scored the third goal to take it to 3-2 in the second half.

The game was killed off again as Hutchinson raced through to supply the goal for the prolific Kevin Phillips to end the game 4-2 to the Mackems.

Sunderland will be hoping for another star performance from a midfielder to try and get something from the top of the table Londoners.

CHELSEA: Cudicini, Leboeuf, Desailly, Hasselbaink, Jokanovic, Wise, Stanic (Poyet), Le Saux, Ferrer (Terry), Gudjohnsen, Gronkjaer (Zola).

SUNDERLAND: Sorensen, Carteron, Gray, HUTCHISON, McCann, Phillips, Kilbane, Craddock, Schwarz, Arca (Williams), Thome.
