Transfer Summary

Today was a surprisingly quiet transfer deadline day, with Sunderland adding only one more name to their wafer-thin squad and three leaving on loan.

Alan Hutton joined for the rest of the season to bolster Steve Bruce`s defensive options. Matt Kilgallon joined a week ago, meaning that Bruce and Quinn have secured only two new players to see out the rest of the season.

Out-of-favour trio Nyron Nosworthy, David Healy and Daryll Murphy have left the club on similar deals, heading to Sheffield United and Ipswich on loan for the remainder of the season.

The lack of activity isn`t a big surprise as Bruce reiterated his reluctance to spend over the odds on wages and transfer fees.

But the Black cats weren`t the only team to be quiet in the window. It has been the slowest moving for years, with less than £25million being spent, in comparison to last seasons £170million. All of the deals involving Sunderland and many other clubs were loan moves, with the biggest name on the move being Robbie Keane to Celtic.

This will no doubt leave many of the Sunderland faithful disgruntled, considering the wealth of targets we`ve been linked with over the past few weeks.

Names like Robbie Keane, James Beattie, Benjani and David James were all linked with the club right up to the deadline, but it was confirmed that Hutton was the club`s only signing.

The solid defender has hardly played for Spurs since joining for £9million from Rangers, and gives Phil Bardsley competition at right-back for the rest of the season.

Hutton is undoubtedly a decent signing, but will he be enough cover for our injury prone squad?
