Support for Cattermole varies after latest red

Lee Cattermole’s red card for a reckless, studs-up challenge of MK Dons defender Adam Chicksen was the seventh of the midfielder’s career to date, landing him in hot water with Martin O’Neill.

The Black Cats’ captain was dismissed in the first-half of last night’s Capital One Cup third round victory over MK Dons after launching himself into a studs-up challenge after losing possession of the ball.

Cattermole’s indiscretion has earned him a three-match ban in all competitions meaning he will miss next month’s derby at the Stadium of Light.

Speaking afterwords to The Sunderland Echo, Sunderland boss Martin O’Neill was less than impressed:

“It was senseless and needless and didn`t give the referee much option in fairness,’ fumed O’Neill.

“I`m told that he`s got five red cards here at Sunderland and seven in his career and, with him still being only 24, I think it`s something he needs to look at.

“He`s the captain of the side and, as a manager, you talk about the importance of discipline to players before the game and it is important your captain demonstrates that discipline.’

The former Middlesbrough and Wigan enforcer was also infamously sent-off against the Mags last season at Sid James’ Park after the full-time whistle.

One man who did offer his support to the skipper was Craig Gardner, scorer of last night’s opening goal in the 2-0 victory at Stadium:MK.

“He was rock bottom in the dressing room afterwards and everyone was trying to pick him up.’ Gardner told The Shields Gazette.

“His attitude in training and on the pitch is spot on. He`s a true leader and I just feel sorry for him.

“He`s the last person in the world who wants to get sent off.’
