Sunderland legend Kevin ‘Super Kev’ Phillips has backed former Aston Villa, Leicester, Celtic and Wycombe boss Martin O’Neill for the Sunderland post.

O’Neill is one of the early front-runners for the vacancy along with ex-Wales, Blackburn and Mancester City supremo, Mark Hughes.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Phillips said:

“I hear Martin O`Neill is the clear favourite and I think that would be a great acquisition for the club.

“Talking with my Sunderland I would certainly like to see Martin O`Neill in the job.”

O’Neill has been out of work since leaving Aston Villa on the eve of last season and despite being heavily linked with the West Ham job last winter, O’Neill remains a free agent.
