Sunderland’s Irish trio of James McClean, John O’Shea and Keiren Westwood have been eliminated from the European Championships following a 4-0 humbling by Spain.

The Republic were outclassed comfortably by Vincent Del Bosque’s European and World champions who took the lead in only the fourth minute.

A neat finish from Fernando Torres, who was re-called in place of Cesc Fabregas, got Spain up-and-running before David Silva finished cheekily after four second half minutes.

Torres grabbed a second with another well-taken goal in the 70th minute before Fabregas entered the fray and quickly thrashed one in off the post in the 83rd minute.

Right-back O’Shea played the full 90 minutes for Giovanni Trapattoni’s side whilst McClean made his first competitive international appearance as a late substitute.

Whilst Westwood is yet to appear at the Championships, he is surely in with a shout for the final group game against Italy after another shaky showing from Shay Given.

Sweden’s Seb Larsson will be looking to start against England in tomorrow’s Group D clash.
