Martin O’Neill has taken former Motherwell, Everton and Birmingham City attacker James McFadden on trial as he looks to improve squad depth.
The 29 year-old winger-cum-forward was released by the Toffees at the end of the previous campaign having made just two Premier League starts last term.
McFadden had previously spent a successful five year stint at Goodison Park following a £1.25m switch from Motherwell in 2003.
O’Neill had revealed last week that he was keen to explore any possibilities in the free agency market and the Glasgow-born forward, who has 15 international goals in 48 appearances, is one man the Black Cats’ boss is evidently looking at.
Despite winning nearly 50 senior international caps, McFadden is currently in international exile after falling out with Scotland manager Craig Levein.
McFadden took exception to being called ‘lazy’ by his international boss in a Euro 2012 qualifier in September 2012 and has been out of the picture since then.
