Ian Porterfield lost his fight against colon cancer last night. His widow told BBC Sport “He may have been a football man all his life, but I know him best as a wonderful human being who was liked by everyone he came in contact with.”

Ian is best known to Sunderland fans for scoring the wining goal against Leeds in the 1973 Cup final.

Ian started his playing career with Raith Rovers before joining Sunderland where he spent over ten years with Sunderland, he then moved on to Sheffield Wednesday.

Ian then went on to manage Sheffield Utd, Aberdeen, Reading, Chelsea, Saudia Arabia, Zambia, Oman, Zimbabwe, Trinidad & Tobago and Armenia.

Jimmy Montgomery led the words of condolence,
He told Sky Sports News “‘It’s a very sad day indeed. I have known him since he first signed for the club and he was just a wonderful man, a gentleman who would do anything for anybody.
‘We had not seen each other for quite a while because of his travels all over the world – but whenever he came back he kept in touch. It’s a great loss.
‘The picture he brings to my mind is with his arms in the air and his wide eyes when he got the goal. It was absolutely wonderful.’

One of the finest and most loyal footballers to pull on the famous red and white stripes has passed away. Gone but never forgotten thanks for the memories Ian.

Our thoughts here at Vital Sunderland go to Ian’s wife and family at this sad time.
