Sunderland Have Half Time Advantage Over United

Sunderland condemned Manchester United to a third straight defeat for the first time in 13 years as they won the first leg of the Capital One cup semi final 2-1.

The Red Devils lost to Tottenham on New Year’s Day, then were dispatched out of the FA Cup by Swansea City before Sunderland made it a hat-trick of defeats for the once high and mighty reds.

Of course the tie is still far from over but it’s better to go to Old Trafford with a goal advantage than start with a level playing field.

Sunderland took the lead in first-half stoppage time when 40-year-old United midfielder Ryan Giggs inadvertently bundled the ball into his own net while under pressure from Phil Bardsley.

Nemanja Vidic tied the score when he scored on a header in the 52nd minute, but Fabio Borini converted a penalty kick for the hosts in the 65th after Tom Cleverley fouled Adam Johnson.

Of course, Moyes had his excuses for the defeat, ironically this time he bemoaned the referee and his assistants, the very same people who have given United everything going over the last few years under the guidance of Bacon Face

‘I feel we are having to play the opposition and the officials at this moment in time,’ Moyes said after the match.

‘Maybe I’ve got to understand that’s what happens at Man United. But if we do, we certainly aren’t getting much in our favour at this moment in time.’
