Sunderland Captain Dean Whitehead has come out and apologised to the fans for the team`s poor performance on Saturday.

Whitehead who was making his comeback from injury on Saturday told safc.com “It’s difficult to put it into words, it’s hard to take.”

“I can only apologise to the fans that paid their money and travelled to Everton. It was unacceptable and we can’t offer much in the way of excuses.”

“We caught Everton on a good day, they played well and credit to them. But to concede seven goals is embarrassing.”

“It was hard for us to take, but I know it was just as hard for the fans. We have to learn from it. We have strong people in the dressing room and there were a few words said after the game.”

“We have belief and I’m confident we can learn from this and bounce back. It makes next weekend’s game even more important.”

“We need to win and show that Saturday was not a true reflection of us. We will try to make it up to the fans. We’re big enough to bounce back.”

Good on the lad for coming forward to apologise for the team`s poor performance on Saturday. However I think the whole team should be apologising for poor performance.

I don`t think any of the players on the pitch can say they played well.

That poor mcshane lad must be *****ting himself at the prospect of playing in front of your fans at the weekend. Quite possibly the worst defender i have ever seen, and we have had some stinkers!

It is the captain’s duty to apologise for the whole team. It’s a pity that some captains seem to forget that. I respect Whitehead for saying that.
