Sunderland Break United Fans Hearts

Sunderland left Old Trafford last night as Wembley finalists after beating Manchester United in the semi final of the Capital One cup on penalties.

And the way it came about was so funny, United had just two minutes to hold out when Phil Bardsley fired in a shot that my Gran would have saved, but De Gea managed to fumble the ball as he stooped to gather it and it went past him and into the corner of the net.

That of course started mass celebrations from the 9,000 strong travelling army of Sunderland fans, but the joy didn’t last for too long.

United, now desperate to get level again went down the other end and with just seconds of the game left Hernandez slammed the ball into the roof of the net and then it was down to penalties to sort the two sides out.

It’s fair to say that earlier in the game United had the best of the chances, but they could not find the net either because Vito stopped them, the post stopped them or they just could not get a shot on target when it mattered.

Sunderland also had a couple of good chances; Fabio Borini fizzed in a shot that went just over the bar after Adam Johnson had set him up on 18 minutes.

United got their big break eventually although it looked like it would never come after Sunderland survived a scramble in the area after Fletcher had hit the post with a header and then Mannone saved Welbeck’s follow up.

Then United were awarded a corner that never was, that came over, Welbeck flicked it onto the far post and Evans turned the ball in from close range with Borini playing him onside.

Buttner then got in the way of a goal bound Johnson effort and Marcos Alonso fired in an effort that was only just wide of the post.

United had a big chance with the last kick of injury time after John O’Shea fouled Hernandez but Mannone dived to his left to save Januzaj’s free-kick.

When the game came to penalties in front of the Sunderland fans, just three of the ten taken kicks were scored in what was a bit of a farce, probably because of nerves ion both camps.

Danny Welbeck and Phil Jones both fired off target and Mannone denied Adnan Januzaj and Rafael, the later being the save that sent 9,000 fans delirious. They were going to Wembley for the first final since 1992.

We now play Man City in the League Cup Final, if Man City beat us and then go onto win the league, does that mean that we go into europe as runners up?

  • Shop Lifter says:

Yes it does. But we will beat City, this is our year!!! Best night ever last night, never to be forgotten

RICK OSHEA – sorry, we have to win to get into Europe.
Prem survival now absolute priority, we will think about Wembley & City (we are their bogey team) nearer the time.

Yeah, dont get carried away because you are goung to be so embarrassing in the final, City will put at least five or six past you and you wont think you are so clever then. You remain in our shadows, always will be

The reason we are in the final is because we beat Chelsea and United fair and square, you lot are the club who is going to be disappointed when you fail to get into europe
