Sunderland said goodbye to the legend Ian Porterfield in style yesterday. Reading on the other hand said goodbye to any chance of some points.

With 10 members of the 1973 FA cup wining squad watching, Sunderland came out on top and bossed the game for at least 80 minutes.

Sunderland came close to scoring through Leadbitter his 25 yard shot was stopped well by Hahnemann and Chopra was judged off side for the follow up which he put over the bar anyway.

Sunderland scored the first goal of the game with a wonderful strike from Kenwyne Jones. He received the ball on the edge of the box held off the challenge from the defender to hit a low drive into the bottom right hand corner.

Minutes later Jones had a chance to double Sunderland`s lead only for him to head the ball over.

Sunderland`s second involved Jones again he put over a low cross for Wallace to tap in at the far post.

Wallace was then denied his second when is shot was cleared off the line by Murty.

Reading got a consolation goal through Kitson around 7 minutes from time to make it a nervy end of the mach for Sunderland.

This was a must win game for us and we won it with ease. Reading never looked like scoring. Their goal was sloppy goal to concede and our defenders must be disappointed not to kept a clean sheet.

Hopefully we have now turned the corner and with a local derby next Saturday a win couldn`t have come at a better time. Now bring on the Smog Monsters.
