A John Terry header was the difference between the two sides at the stadium of light.

A fit again Carlos Edwards was one of three changes to the side which faced Everton last week.

Sunderland started the game brightly with a Jones flick on finding O`Donovan in the box only for Terry to haul him down. Referee Mike Dean denying the penalty appeal form O`Donovan.

Seconds later Sunderland conceded the corner from which Terry scored. Frank Lampard`s corner found him in the box for a free header.

Sunderland`s next chance came when Jones was fouled on the edge of the box to win a free kick. Up steps Andy Reid to take a delightful free kick that Cudicini somehow kept out.

Sunderland came out after the break with a bit or urgency and nearly got the equalizer they deserved with both Leadbitter and Collins coming close.

Chelsea nearly doubled their lead when Drogba burst into the box however his cross was too strong for Lampard steaming on at the far post.

Sunderland had another chance the level the score when Dwight Yorke found Jones with a wonderful pass only for Jones to direct his header straight at Cudicini.

Chelsea again threatened to score when Wright-Phillips found himself through on goal. Craig Gordon pulled off an outstanding save to deny the young England winger.

Sunderland two more chances to steal a share of the points. Jones and Whitehead both coming close.

Vital Sunderland Says
A good performance by the lads just a shame we could turn the performance into goal`s. It`s now even more important we get something from the game with Aston Villa next week.
