*Niall Quinn admitted on Sky Sports News yesterday that he has made an enquiry about former strike partner Kevin Phillips, claiming that,

‘I’ve made a couple of enquiries about Kevin but the situation at Aston Villa is that nothing is happening until the ownership/managerial situation is resolved,`

‘I wanted someone like him around to show the guys what it’s like to make the leap up and get the best out of themselves. To have him around the place would be special.

‘But I understand he is an Aston Villa player, I understand the predicament they find themselves in but if he ever did become available, then hopefully he would want to come.`

While fans would ideally love to see Phillips back in a Sunderland shirt as soon as possible, any transfer is not likely to happen until January, when the transfer window re-opens. By then the situation at Aston Villa is likely to be resolved.

*In the same interview Quinn denied the claims that he was in for Sheffield United striker Geoff Horsefiled. The former West Brom frontman has fallen out with Neil Warnock and is open to offers, with Leeds, Preston and Crystal Palace all said to be interested. However, Quinn denied any interest in the player,

‘We haven’t made any enquiry at all about Geoff. He’s a player who I admire, he’s done a very good job over the years but, just for us at the moment, he’s not one we’re looking at.`

*However with the future of Kevin Kyle unsure, Quinn may yet decide to move for Horsefield. Kyle is said to be attracting the interest of opening day opponents Coventry City and Mike Newell`s Luton Town. Sunderland have made it clear that they are prepared to listen to offers for the big target man, who scored 16 goals for Sunderland in his last full Championship season. Newell is said to be keen to pair up Kyle with new striker Adam Boyd, a £500,000 signing from Hartlepool, while Coventry boss Micky Adams wants Kyle to add a bit of Brawn upfront alongside Gary McSheffrey. New Wolves manager Mick McCarthy has also been linked with the striker in the press, however this is unlikely to have much substance.

*One player who has left the Stadium of Light is French Midfielder Christian Bassila, who left the club on a free to join Greek club Larissa, activating a clause in his contract that allowed him to leave for no fee should the club be relegated. Sunderland chief executive Peter Walker said:

‘Christian has activated the clause so he was free to speak to clubs. We would like to thank Christian and give him our best wishes with his new club.`

*West Ham full back Clive Clarke is expected to join the club in the next few days, after Quinn made a move for the player who rejected a move to the Stadium of Light only a year ago. However after failing to establish himself at Upton Park the player is prepared to make the move to Wearside and Quinn hopes to have him in time for the trip to Coventry where he may be thrown straight in to the side. It is likely that any deal will initially be a temporary loan, in view of a permanent transfer at a later date.

*Another loan target is Wigan goalkeeper Mike Pollitt, however Quinn`s chances of bringing him to the Stadium of Light have been dealt a blow as John Filan, Wigan`s third choice ‘keeper, is injured and Wigan are now unlikely to allow Pollitt to leave.

*One goalkeeper who may sign however is Austrian trialist Michael Gspurning. The big stopper has impressed in training and will tomorrow take part in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Darlington at 3pm, alongside fellow trialists Arnau Caldentey Riera and Endika Bordas, when Quinn and co. will run the rule over him.

*Finally, Quinn is to receive an answer from Spurs about his tentative enquiry about winger Andy Reid in the next couple of days, with a season long loan preferable to Spurs rather than a permanent transfer. Claims in the media that Quinn had made a double bid for Reid and defender Callum Davenport are thought to be wide of the mark.

I can’t see Tottenham selling Reid or Davenport at the moment, I think that Reid will get a chance this year to prove his worth (if he can stay out of the pie shop lol)
