Despite still not having any manager in place it seems Niall Quinn is still prepared to wheel and deal in the transfer market.

With Kenny Cunningham all but signed, goalkeeper Kelvin Davis and winger Julio Arca have agreed terms with bidding clubs to take them out of Wearside.

Davis missed Saturday’s 3-0 win at Forest Green as he was in discussions with Southampton in view of a prospective £1m deal. Arca flew out to Spain straight after the match to meet representatives from Espanyol, where he agreed a four-year deal with the Catalan club.

Both players have agreed terms, however Quinn is yet to accept any fee for the pair. Southampton are believed to have offered £850,000 while Espanyol have offered around £500,000 for Arca. And while Southampton’s figure may not have to be increased by too much for it to be accepted, Espanyol are said to be some way off Sunderland’s valuation of the Argentine, despite him having only one more year on his current contract.

Ben Alnwick played the full ninety minutes at Forest Green, and with Davis set to leave, it would seem that the youngster has got what he wanted and will be Sunderland’s new number one. Quinn has clearly decided that keeping the club’s best youngsters will be his top priority, and he is prepared to sell the inconsistent Davis to do so. It can still be expected that a goalkeeping acquisition will be made however, with the inexperienced Trevor Carson the only backup for Alnwick.

As for Arca, he’s no longer a young lad and second tier football will not be appealing for the second time. Having made the effort to go to Spain for talks, it would seem that those of you who go to watch him play against Rotherham on Wednesday, may well be seeing his final appearance in a Sunderland shirt.
