To celebrate the apppointment of Niall Quinn as manager and the imminent completion of his consortium’s takeover, fans have organised for a ‘St Niall’s Day’ to take place on the 12th August, to coincide with Sunderland’s home game vs Plymouth.

Here’s the official press release;

Return of the Disco Pants

Save our Sunderland, like all Sunderland fans have followed the developments at the club since the end of the season with great interest. Over the summer Sunderland fans have endured endless speculation, familiarised themselves with the rules of the Stock Exchange and everybody on the Irish rich list. As a group committed to the long term success of Sunderland AFC we are delighted that Mr. Quinn and his consortium have bought the club. The passion, loyalty and patience demonstrated by Sunderland fans in recent years has finally been rewarded with some hope and belief.

SOS in conjunction with A Love Supreme is pleased to announce that Saturday 12th August, when Plymouth visit the SOL, has been declared St Niall`s Day. Merchandise purchased by SOS volunteers and ALS will be handed out at the match. Anyone wishing to help please contact saveoursunderland@hotmail .com

The day will mark a celebration of everything that is great about Sunderland AFC. Let`s show the consortium that the passion amongst the fans still burns bright. Let`s turn the Stadium of Light into a cathedral of noise and a sea of green, with renditions of ‘Disco Pants` bouncing off the roof.

Celebrate the passion and loyalty of the 1,000,000 fans who have attended and endured the 27 Premiership matches staged at the Stadium of Light following the victory over Liverpool in December 2002. After which their team only picked up five points until their next victory against Fulham in May this year. Those fans never gave less than 100% during this time and deserve success more than any other set of supporters in the country.

So whether you`re a supporter, a local resident, if you run a local business or even have an official capacity at the club (we`ll let you off with a green tie Mr. Quinn) don something green and join the ride on the magic carpet. Celebrate your passion for your club and the obsession of your fellow supporters. Bring a Guinness hat, a goalkeeping top, a green t-shirt, a green wig, dye your hair green – come dressed in Disco pants or even just in green?

Here’s to a successful enjoyable day and a better season than last. Plymouth fans can wear their home kit if they wish to join in.

Welcome home Quinny, Lord of the Disco Pants and bring on the good times?
