The former England under-17 international full back has made only two full appearances for the Black Cats this term, both coming in the Carling Cup.

Despite the injury to first choice left back George McCartney, boss Mick McCarthy has adequate cover with Danny Collins, Justin Hoyte and Julio Arca all capable of playing in that position.

With McCarthy also rumoured to have made a bid for Republic of Ireland left back Ian Harte, it is clear Smith is a fair way from breaking into the Sunderland first team.

Huddersfield manager Peter Jackson told his club’s official website: ‘I am delighted that Mick McCarthy has let him come here on a month’s loan.

‘He is a solid player, able to play either in defence or the side of midfield. With Tony Carss injured we only have Danny Adams who is left-footed and I felt that we needed some cover in this area.’
