Robbie Elliot has signed a one-month deal with Sunderland that will allow him to play in Sunderland’s opening Championship fixtures.

The former Newcastle full back left the club this summer after refusing a one year contract extension. And after an unsuccessful trial at Leeds he took part in a week-long trial at the Academy of Light.

Following that, gaffer Niall Quinn has offered Elliot a short, one-month deal, which Elliot has accepted,

Quinn told the official website,

‘Robbie has impressed around the place this week, but we have both agreed that we will learn a lot more about his future prospects at the club during what is a demanding
first month of the season.

‘Robbie is eligible to play for the first team and, for the time being, it’s a case of let’s see what the next month brings’.

With the injury to George McCartney likely to keep the Northern Irish international out for several weeks, Elliot will be given the chance to impress the club and fans to earn a longer contract. He is eligible to play in the season opener at Coventry.
