Sunderland’s Argentina international defender Santiago Vergini has joined Spanish side Getafe on a season-long loan.

The 26 year old has gone to the Spanish outfit with a task of impressing the club into giving him a permanent contract at the end of the current term.

Vergini has never really done much at the Stadium of Light to set hearts racing with excitement and has now been told that he is surplus to the club’s requirements.

A statement on the Getafe official website said: ‘Sunderland AFC defender Santiago Vergini has joined Spanish La Liga side Getafe CF on a season-long loan deal with a view to a permanent transfer.’
