During the transfer window, Big Sam brought in around £20 million worth of new playershas credited Sunderland’s January signings for their 2-1 win over Manchester United.

The Black Cats spent about £20 million during the transfer window and one of the five players brought in, Wahbi Khazri, opened the scoring in the 3rd minute of the game at the Stadium of Light.

Lamine Kone, another new signing was on hand to score the winner although the goal was registered as a De Gea own goal.

Allardyce told BBC radio Newcastle: ‘The new players have made this victory.

‘Wahbi scored one and made one. Lamine scored the winner, and the team could have scored more.’


Out of the five new faces, four of them were in the starting line up before kick off and Big Sam believes that Sunderland now have a greater chance of survival with them and the confidence boosting win over United.

‘I think the impact the new boys have had for us will hopefully increase that competition within the squad,’ the boss added.

‘I’ve always said throughout my career that if you have increased competition you’re going to get increased performances and ultimately better results.’
