According to newspaper reports, Southampton are soon to come after Sunderland striker Connor Wickham to take the place of Rickie Lambert.

The Saints lost Lambert to Liverpool recently and they are now short of firepower up front, something that new boss Ronald Koeman wants to address straight away.

The Daily Mirror says that Koeman has targeted Wickham knowing that he is in the final twelve months of his current contract and has yet to show any interest in signing another with the Black Cats.

Last season Wickham had a very decent spell wit Sheffield Wednesday on loan before moving to Leeds on the same sort of deal. But Gus Poyet cut his stay at Elland Road short to give him a chance to help rescue Sunderland which he took with relish, playing a major part in the club’s escape from the drop into the Championship.

A figure that has been mentioned is £6 million and if that proves to be the case Poyet could well sell the striker to part fund a move for Fabio Borini.
